Big Blue Tech celebrates the graduation of Michael Junkers, Ammar Dajani and Turo Tossavainen from their TDI Cavern Diver and TDI Intro to Cave diver course conducted by TDI Cave Instructor Trainer Ben Reymenants during a 5 day expedition to Khao Sok National Park in southern Thailand.

There’s a new challenge for divers in Thailand – freshwater cave diving in the newly discovered underwater cave system of Khao Sok National Park.

Khao Sok National Park in Thailand is an area usually visited for the ancient rain forest, jungle trekking and wildlife spotting opportunities. This lush area is dominated by 165kmsq lake which was created by a damming project, limestone pinnacles tower out of the water creating a stunning vista all around. Transport is by traditional Thai longtail boat only and the area is peaceful and serene. The damming heightened the water, flooding some amazing formations that have all but passed into history. Careful exploration and research is beginning to locate some of these submerged sites and this is what I was here to document.

Cave diving is a type of technical diving in which specialized SCUBA equipment is used to enable the exploration of natural or artificial caves which are at least partially filled with water. In the UK it is an extension of the more common sport of caving, and in the US an extension of the more common sport of SCUBA diving. It is much more rarely practiced due to the skills and equipment required, and because of the high potential risks.

Despite these risks, water-filled caves attract SCUBA divers, cavers, and speleologists due to their often unexplored nature, and present divers with a technical diving challenge. Caves often have a wide range of unique physical features, such as stalactites and stalagmites, and can contain unique flora and fauna not found elsewhere.

Other sections of the national park hold secrets including a sunken temple reserved for the most experienced technical divers. The next schedule expedition to the sunken temple is in April of 2011.
