Diver finds year old purse in Menai Strait
A MUM-OF-TWO can’t believe her luck after a scuba diver returned a purse – intact with £160 – she dropped in the sea over a year ago.
David McCreadie was diving in the Menai Strait when he found the purse on the sea bed.
It belonged to Angela Hardaker, from Prestatyn, who lost it near the pier while out with friends at the Liverpool Arms pub in Menai Bridge last spring.
He’s now hoping to find her £400 handbag, still missing beneath the waves.
The pair met yesterday so David, owner of Derimon Smokery in Dulas Bay, Anglesey, could return the purse and cash to the mum-of-two.
He had managed to dry out the money using racks at the smokery.
David said: “I was scuba diving off Menai Bridge near the pier when I found a big purse on the sea floor.
“I brought it back up, put it in a bucket of fresh water and showed my wife, Gwen. It was covered in barnacles but we managed to open it.
“There were a few coins and credit cards, and then we opened the other pocket and found £160 in £20 notes.
“I took them all and managed to dry them out in the smokery.”
Gwen managed to contact Angela via her bank and she was reunited with the purse yesterday.
David, 60, added: “The bank asked Angela if she’d lost her purse and she said she hadn’t, but then remembered that over a year ago she had dropped her £400 Yves Saint Laurent bag near the pier, which also had her car keys in it.
“I’ve been back down since to see if I can find it but had no luck. I’ll keep trying though.”
Angela, 36, thanked David for returning the purse and hopes to hear from him again if he finds her handbag.
The mum-of-two said: “I’m so grateful to David, I can’t believe he dried out all the notes. The bank has even agreed to swap them for new ones so I can use them again.
“I never thought I’d see that purse again. Then out of the blue this week I got a call from the bank telling me it had been found by a scuba diver – I couldn’t believe it. I’m overwhelmed that he returned it to me and hope he has the same luck with my handbag if he’s ever diving in the same area.”
